This is one of my 3-inch by 3-inch acrylic paintings from my “Birds in the Hood” series.  I painted the bird silhouette using one of my photographs of a crow.  On the street that meets ours, crows gather in large numbers at sundown.  Just tonight, while heading out to dinner, we turned the corner and found ourselves in what could have passed as the set of that old Hitchcock movie.  Eventually, I'll do a painting of the whole dang murder; but here, I just singled one out.

After signing it, I finished it with 5 coats of glossy varnish. I include a black wooden easel for you to display this painting on a surface such as a desk, shelf, or fireplace mantel.  There is no hanging hardware on the back of the piece.

Here is the back story on my “Birds in the Hood” series:

I love birds; I feature them in many of my felt and jewelry pieces.  When I walk my fur kids in the neighborhood, I take my camera with me to photograph whatever catches my fancy; it usually ends up being birds.  My neighborhood and back yard are full of corvids, house finches, scrub jays, hummingbirds, phoebes, towhees, sparrows, pigeons, and probably lots of other winged creatures that I have yet to identify.

Once I paint my acrylic backgrounds on canvas and let them dry, I use my photographs to paint silhouettes onto them.  Then I paint in branches to effectively “re-home” the bird, as many of my photos are of birds on power wires, poles, and roofs.  After the silhouette is dry, I apply 5 coats of varnish to the painting to both add depth and protect the surface of the painting.

Each painting is one-of-a-kind, as I cannot exactly reproduce any of my backgrounds.
